CNN is shook that people in Taiwan aren’t falling for their warmongering propaganda

MLD-PD

‘Could it be that these recent tensions are entirely manufactured and have no basis in reality? No! It is the people of Taiwan who are wrong for not panicking when we tell them to!’

This is hilarious, the Taiwanese ppl basically exposed the west for their fearmongering to manufacture a war lmao

TheRook10

Not only the west, but the DPP constantly trying to ratchet up a "red scare".

MarsLowell

TMW the KMT is somehow not the worst party.

MLD-PD

Honestly, the KMT before CKS and his purges was pretty based, and played a very important part in China's national rejuvenation. A left wing branch of the KMT is still one of the larger secondary parties on the mainland. I hope one day that [email protected]'s KMT can go back to their roots and work together with the CPC as a new united front.

MarsLowell

I consider the KMT before and after Jiang Jieshi’s ascension to power to be different parties tbh. The former was a big tent Chinese nationalist party which would include members of CPC (who were either members of both before the purge or joined the communists after) while the latter was the Rightists who sided with Jiang. To say nothing of Wang’s group of Japanese collaborators.

[deleted]

Nooo most Taiwanese support independence these are clearly CCP agents masquerading as Taiwanese citizens!!!

readituser013

The economic and cultural forces for peaceful reunification is literally inevitable, the material realities of the Taiwan -- PRC relations is that China is the biggest importer and exporter to Taiwan by factors, that mainland China is the biggest source of tourism and tourists, that mainland China is by far the most popular location for economic migration aka job opportunities.

Ckcw23

Actually they don’t really like Mainlanders. My tour guide insults mainlanders like there’s no tomorrow.

readituser013

These people don't have a coherent, specific complaint about mainlanders, it's just the fascistic idea of the Other as the source of all liberal democratic, capitalist society's problems.

Ckcw23

They kinda do though, the tour guide told us many tour guides don’t really like them, they’re too uncouth.

sedlaghs

Tbf that goes for a lot of different regions in China. Shanghai / Beijing people sometimes look down on those from less developed cities, less developed cities look down on the countryside, etc. My mother grew up hearing people tell her to “never marry a rural farmer from (X) area because they’re all bad-mannered”. I’m not surprised that there are Taiwanese that have that feeling towards mainlanders in general. Even if they reunified peacefully and with people’s support, those feelings would probably exist to some degree.

balgruufgat

I mean isn't that also just tourists in general though? Presumably mainland tourists are their largest demographic so they'd be exposed to more of them therefore it becomes more noticeable?

Tutush

British people don't like American tourists, mainland Europeans don't like British tourists, etc etc.

MLD-PD

I visited the island in 2018 with a group of mainlanders, and the interactions between them and the the locals (tour guides, service worker, police officers, etc.) were nothing but amicable. I don’t doubt that there is some degree of regional prejudice, but I don’t think it’s the rule.

yuewanggoujian

Anyone who truly understands cross-strait relations knows there won’t be a war unless foreign forces want one. All Chinese know the issues can be resolved through dialog. It’s not in the best interest of the mainland to hurt our brothers and sisters; the people in Taiwan know this. The only people who want to see blood are the ones with self interest; and not people who truly care about the people on both straits.

ballsgone

quite literally, lots of cnn staff is made up of former glowies

GG-00

>Beijing could have the capacity to invade the island within the next six years. Uh, China has that capacity *today*. They could easily take the island by force any time that they want to, and everybody knows it. The problem is that a lot of Chinese people would die on both sides, and China doesn't want that.

4evaronin

I can see a lot of people dying on the Taiwanese side but not on the PRC side. If a lot (or near equal number) of people die on the PRC side, that would undoubtedly still be considered a loss regardless of whether Taiwan is taken or not.

ya_alt

Generally the attacking side will take more losses than the defending side. It depends if anyone else gets involved. If its just Taiwan and China then yes I could see that.

GG-00

If fighting actually breaks out, I can see a lot of people dying on the PRC side - it's not like the Taiwanese have NO weapons and would refuse to use them. The Taiwanese side would definitely suffer vastly higher casualties, that's for certain.

psuedoignatius

I used to work with a woman from Taiwan. I once asked her how she felt about Taiwan rejoining the mainland and she said she didn't care: the Taiwanese government was corrupt and greedy so she felt no loyalty.

Intelligent_Toe_611

If any of yall know JG Michael/Parallax Views, he did an episode with a prior ambassador to China, can't remember which administration he was under. Good episode, I'll link it if I can find it real quick, but he basically said the most that China wanted to do was just involve Taiwan's elected leaders in the machinations of the government on the mainland, like just having them come in and give their input lmao. IIRC, he said that China moved away from that position because of the US being dumbasses. Edit: [here's a link to the Apple podcast episode.](https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/u-s-china-relations-diplomacy-and-war-w-amb-chas-freeman/id1385121108?i=1000519010393)

OnitsukaTigerOGNike

The worst part would actually be if Western powers got involved and could lead to a world conflict if any of them commit militarily. If It was only PRC vs ROC, ROC defenses would crumble and just seek for peace, and there would not be a lot of distruction to the population centers. The only logical thing for the people of Taiwan to do once they are invaded is surrender, as a prolonged conflict would only hurt Taiwan, I mean It's not like the PRC will imprison the citizens and freeze their bank accounts, or make them slaves. Life would pretty much remain the same. Ideologically they are different, but in reality, the life of a person living in Taipei compared to a person living in Shanghai is not that different, and fighting for democracy at the cost of your friends, and family's lives and wellbeing is not worth it as we saw countless times.

MLD-PD

Right. I'm pretty certain that, if there was no outside parties involved, [email protected] (don't want to trigger the bot) and the Mainland would have reunified peacefully decades ago. As I see it, the purpose of the mainland's naval/missile buildup is to make outside intervention impossible, therefore creating the conditions for the government of [email protected] to accept reality and come to the negotiating table. From what I've seen, many people in [email protected] are very much like so many other people living in so-called 'free' countries. They're swiftly discovering that their bourgeois democracy is not at all worth defending.

sickof50

CNN is SWAT'ing China... The equivalent of calling the Police, and reporting you've got a gun and you're going to kill everyone in a house.

bbbbbyyyu

It’s like when they saw Afghanistani people abandoned 20 years of US rule in an afternoon all while pumping propaganda that Taliban had no chance 😂
