I got pierced five days ago and now my right ear is swollen/throbbing. My entire upper ear is red and tender. Should I be going to a doctor? 🥲

Is there any pus? Thick, yellow or green discharge that smells bad? It looks irritated for sure but I'm not convinced it's infected, it doesn't look as purple and hot as an infection, but it could be one brewing. I would see how it goes today, if its getting worse and you notice pus (not lymph fluid which is normal) then pop down to urgent care but I wouldn't rush down if that makes sense? In the meantime to help the discomfort a cold compress will help and if you're able to take it ibuprofen will bring down some of the swelling.

No pus or discharge just yet! Okay, I'll give it a couple more days before I really start to panic :( I heard a hot compress is better than cold compresses for promoting healing blood flow, should I try that? Thank you!!

Good, just keep an eye on it. Cartilage can have a delayed swelling. A hot compress will usually bring out more swelling so you need to be careful with them, also if you suspect an infection they can encourage bacteria to grow being hot and damp either due to sweat or using like a hot wet cloth as the compress. If you have like a little hot or cold gel pack for pulled muscles etc that wrapped in a clean cloth would be okay for a little but as soon as sweat happens you will need to remove it

When my ear was infected, it was incredibly painful and swollen, like to the point where touching it made me flinch. My lymph node beneath my ear was also hard as a rock. You can go to be safe, because infections are nothing to mess with! It also very well might just be irritated and very angry with you, because that’s happened to me with new piercings as well! The infection pain only got worse though and my ear eventually swelled so much it felt almost hard vs the irritation was just very red and angry

My ear definitely feels tender to the touch but my lymph nodes seem fine - no swelling. If you were me, how soon would you go? :(

Honestly, I went as soon as a felt my lymph node get swollen because I was like “ooo that’s a definite.” I don’t think there’s anything wrong with getting it checked out just to be sure, I did a virtual consult with mine and she gave me antibiotics and all was well like as day and a half later! It worked so quickly.

So I just did a virtual consult and my doctor prescribed me with oral antibiotics! Thanks for your suggestion. She also told me to get my piercing removed ASAP, but I know that's not always recommended in this sub... she was also an older lady so I'm not sure if she's really familiar with piercings in general. I'll consult with another doctor tomorrow and get their opinion. Thank you for your help!

Sorry for the blurry photos! My camera is shit. I had my helixes pierced on Sunday at a professional piercing studio with sterile needles. The moon studs are flatbacks and medical grade implant grade titanium. Yesterday I woke up feeling like my right ear was irritated, and definitely noticed some redness/tenderness that wasn't there before. Now it's MUCH more swollen and the redness seems to have spread. The night before yesterday, I tried using a travel pillow, but I move around a lot in my sleep so I may have snagged the piercing/slept on it. But I'm not 100% sure if this is a normal reaction to that - it feels pretty severe... My left ear is completely fine. I've been using SSS on both ears at least twice a day. My anxiety is getting to me now and I'm wondering if I should ditch the Thanksgiving festivities and go to an urgent care center now ☹
